he opted for a cautiously equivocating nonstatement that chastised “many sides.” That is intentional and hugely significant. is inspired by the true story of master pianist and composer Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his tour across the American South in the early 1960s. But the protagonist of the film is Italian-American Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), a crass, off-the-cuff bodyguard-driver hybrid whose job is to make sure Don gets to his concerts safely, protected from violent, racist white people, who are meant to stand in stark opposition to Tony’s more casual brand of racism.
